Meet Chandra Halko

This week our #WednesdayswithMDBInsight post introduces Chandra Halko, Officer Manager, the “glue” that holds it all together and supports our entire team at MDB Insight.

Q: When did you join the MDB Insight team? And what surprised you the most about your first month with the firm?

A: August 2019. I was delightfully surprised by how warm and supportive everyone was.  I was welcomed without reservation. It immediately felt like I was one of the family. I was also surprised by how meaningful the projects are that the company works on. The recommendations they provide to the communities they work with have the potential to make a real difference in people’s lives.

Q: You previously worked for many years in tourism and hospitality – has that background helped you in your new role?

A: Working in tourism and hospitality specifically hasn’t helped in this role but working with a large team where my job was to make sure everyone had what they needed when they needed it certainly has helped me be a better Office Manager.

Q: In a position that requires multi-tasking and attention to detail all day, what do you do to keep your brain nimble and sharp?

A: Despite working with numbers all day I do love a good Sudoku (especially Killer Sudoku). But when I just need to switch off, I like to reset with British comedy.

Q: What’s the coolest thing you’ve worked on in the last couple of months?

A: The annual budget. It’s a substantial undertaking and one that I found challenging in a really satisfying way.

Q: You share a love of coffee with teammate Chris Bandak – have you compared notes or preferences?

A: We have! We both appreciate quality for sure. At work I’m loving my new Aeropress, and at home my favourite way to make coffee is with my pretty yellow stove-top moka pot with beans from my favourite roaster, Continental Coffee in Vancouver.

Q: You come from a background in the arts and spent many years in Vancouver. Now that you live in Kingston are you finding the arts and culture scene very different?

A: Absolutely! It’s much more embraced here. In Vancouver unfortunately it felt like venues and festivals are constantly closing down and arts funding keeps getting cut in favour of other things. I love that my new home has festivals every couple of weeks it seems.  Music, Film, Art…all the things I love really seem to thrive here.

Q: What’s your favourite thing on your desk right now, and why?

A: I have a little fluffy pom pom bee with a tag that says “Bee here now.” It’s a nice reminder to stay in the moment.
